Description

Knee-high compression socks for women who stand or sit for hours: long shifts, days at a desk, long flights and long drives. When your legs barely move, blood flows back up more slowly and fluid settles round your ankles. These socks press firmest at the ankle and ease off towards the knee, which helps blood flow back up, for less heavy legs and less swelling by the end of the day.

Three colour sets: All Black, Classic (black, grey and navy) or Garden (cream, sage and deep green). They look like any other sock, with a soft band that sits just under the knee. Packs of 3, 6 or 8 (Garden in packs of 3), free tracked delivery and 30 days to wear them in.

Size guide

Support only works when it fits, so every size at Elvarelle is in centimetres, measured on you and not on your shoe size. Use a soft tape measure, keep it flat against your skin without pulling it tight, and measure in the morning, when legs and feet are at their smallest.

Between two sizes, take the larger one. If a product has no size table yet, email support@elvarelle.com with the product name and your measurement, and we will tell you which size fits.

Measurements for this item are available on request. Email support@elvarelle.com with the item name and the size you are considering.

Why it works

Why your legs feel heavy by 4pm

  • Lightest under the knee
  • Easier over the calf
  • Firmest at the ankle
  1. Hours without moving

On your feet at work, at a desk, on a plane or behind the wheel. Walking makes your calf muscles pump blood back up. Standing or sitting still, they hardly do.

  2. It settles round your ankles

Blood flows back more slowly and fluid collects low down. That is the heavy, puffy feeling by 4pm, and the deep marks your ordinary socks leave.

  3. A gentle squeeze, firmest at the ankle

The sock presses most at the ankle and less towards the knee, so it helps blood flow back up instead of pooling. Put them on in the morning, before your legs start to ache.

The research

Not just a tight sock

Ours are 15 to 20 mmHg: the light, everyday strength used in this research. Firmer than that is for your GP to decide.

  • Less swelling by the evening

In people who sit or stand at work, light compression socks reduced, and often fully prevented, the swelling that builds up in the lower legs over the day.

Partsch, Winiger and Lun, Dermatologic Surgery, 2004
  • Less aching after a day on your feet

Hairdressers who wore 15 to 20 mmHg socks at work had less aching and less of that swollen feeling than on the days they went without.

    Blazek and others, Phlebology, 2013
  • The research agrees

A review of the studies on workers came to the same conclusion: light compression reduces leg swelling at work and the heaviness that comes with it.

Guedes and others, Porto Biomedical Journal, 2020

When women wear them

  • On your feet all day
  • At a desk all day
  • Long-haul flights
  • Long drives
  • Expecting a baby
  • Days out walking

Sound familiar?

Why most compression socks end up in a drawer

  • "They look like hospital stockings"

Plain black, grey, navy or soft greens, knee-high, like any other sock. No shine.

In real life: Under your work trousers, nobody will know. On holiday, with linen trousers and trainers.

  • "By lunchtime they have rolled down and dug in"

A soft, wide band sits just under the knee. You never fold the top over, so there is no double band to dig in.

In real life: Put them on at 7 and forget about them until you are home.

  • "Getting them on is exhausting"

Turn them inside out to the heel, step in, roll them up. There is a knack, and it takes half a minute once you have it.

In real life: Sitting on the edge of the bed, by yourself, before the kettle has boiled.

  • "I measured carefully and still got the wrong size"

Most brands size by your shoe. We size by your calf in cm and tell you the sock length too, so wide calves and short legs are not a guess.

In real life: Wrong size anyway? That is covered by the 30-day wear test.

  • "They laddered the second time I wore them"

Roll them on from inside out, never pull them up by the top, and keep your nails clear of the knit. That is where most ladders start.

In real life: A ladder or a hole in the first 30 days? Send us a photo and you get your money back.

  • "Sending them back costs more than they did"

With our wear test you do not post anything back. Not for you? Email us and we refund you.

In real life: No label to print, no queue at the post office.

Sized in cm

Measure your calf, not your shoe

Type your measurement and we pick the size.

Measure first thing in the morning, standing up, round the widest part of your calf. Then check the length: from your heel to just under your knee.

  • S/M25 to 32 cmlength 35 to 37 cm
  • L/XL33 to 38 cmlength 37 to 39 cm

Step by step

On by yourself in half a minute

  1. 1Turn it inside out

Hand in the sock, pinch the heel, and pull the leg inside out down to the heel.

  2. 2Step in

Slide your foot in and settle the heel where it should be.

  3. 3Roll it up

Bit by bit over your calf. Smooth the knit, don't pull it.

  4. 4Stop under the knee

Two fingers below the back of the knee. Never fold the top over.

A long day in them

From the first coffee to the sofa

  1. 07:00On in half a minute

Before your legs have had a chance to swell. Sitting on the edge of the bed, by yourself.

  2. 16:00Ankles that still look like ankles

The time your shoes usually start to feel tight. The band is still where you put it.

  3. 20:00Legs that don't feel like lead

Peel them off from the top and put your feet up. Into the wash, cold.

  4. TomorrowA clean pair, ready

Six in a pack, so there is always one in the drawer before an early start.

A pack, not a pair

Do they really help with swollen ankles and heavy legs?

They are firmest at the ankle and ease off towards the knee, which helps blood flow back up the leg. That is what the research found too: light compression reduced evening leg swelling in people who sit or stand at work. Everyone is different, and they work best put on in the morning.

How soon will I notice a difference?

Usually on the first long day. You notice it at the end of it: ankles less puffy and legs less heavy than on a day without them.

I sit at a desk all day. Are they for me too?

Yes. Sitting still is as hard on your legs as standing still: your calves hardly move, so your ankles swell by the afternoon. Put them on in the morning and keep them on through the working day.

Do they help on a long flight or a long drive?

Hours in a seat is exactly when ankles swell. Put them on before you leave home and keep them on until you arrive. If you have had a blood clot, or your GP says you are at risk of one, ask them about medical flight stockings first.

Will they feel tight?

Firmer than a normal sock, mostly at the ankle, and easier towards the knee. They should never pinch or leave your toes cold or numb. If they do, take them off and email us, and we will help you check the size.

Will a new pack fit like the last one?

Every pair is made to the same size chart. If a pair in your pack fits differently, email us a photo and we will put it right.

My calves are wide but my legs are short. Which size?

Measure from your heel to just under your knee as well. If that is under 35 cm, email us both measurements before you order and we will tell you honestly if they will fit.

I fly next week. Will they arrive in time?

Delivery takes 7 to 12 working days, with tracking. If you fly sooner, we would rather tell you now: order two weeks before you go.

Will they be too warm?

They are a fine, thin knit, not a thick wool sock. On a very hot day you will feel them more than a normal sock, like any compression sock.

Can I wear them when I am pregnant?

Lots of women do, because legs and ankles often swell more when you are expecting. Ask your midwife or GP first. They know your situation.

Everyday support for long days, not a medical device. If you have a circulation problem, diabetes or a skin condition, ask your GP or pharmacist before you wear compression. If one leg suddenly swells, hurts or feels hot, see a doctor straight away.
